I think you answered your question. It was a penal colony of Britain for years. The convicts exiled there were most likely of lower-class standing, and it's highly unlikely they spoke 'proper' English. The accent most likely developed from a mixing of cockney English, mixed with Irish, mixed with (most likely) aboriginal. I think the accent is pretty cool. It's similar to what is found in Newfoundland. The accent is a mixture of cockney English, Irish and French. The accent is so distinct that it is considered its own dialect of English called, you guessed it, Newfoundland English.

It sounds a bit like cockney though doesn't it. I would imagine that its a bit like cockney meets irish.
I think similarly the traditional american accent is a twisted form of mainly irish mixed in with other influences

i does no longer choose an accessory. yet once you prefer to sound British (nicely-known English gained Pronunciation), and in case you have have been given a pair of stable ears, in simple terms watch BBC and immitate the accessory and think of approximately the way it relatively is not comparable to the Austrailian accessory. That way, you will no longer would desire to rigidity approximately identifying on up the accessory. on the different hand, in case you haven't any longer have been given a solid pair of ears, you does no longer be waiting to %. up the community accessory that relatively. the two way, you mustn't would desire to rigidity.

It's called "accent leveling".
Australia, in its early days, was not a homogeneous society; as you pointed out, there were different sorts of accents from different parts of the U.K., all dropped off together.
The (beautiful!) Australian accent is the result of all these accents distilling into one.
