Tell him you will always love him . Tell him even Scott Petersons parents love him even after he killed his wife and unborn child . A mother will always love there child , right or wrong.

He may be going through a stage or actually gay. All you can do is to be there for him if he needs you. Let him come to you because all you can really do at this time is let him know that you love him unconditionally. If you force the issue and he is not ready, you might alienate him. Be patient and loving. I wish you much luck and commend you for unconditional love.

BTW, joking is often 'testing the waters' to see how people will react.

I think the first answer said it best. If he's mentioning the subject jokingly, he probably wants to know what other people think, but could just be embarrassed to bring it up in a more serious way. Bringing up related subjects yourself, without asking him directly, would be a sensitive way of letting him know that you are accepting and not judgmental, and might lead to him coming out if that's what he wants.
Thank you for caring so much, and trying to handle the situation properly - I'm sure he will thank you himself in future.

Talk to him and be his best friend. I think my parents suspected it a long time ago but never really asked me. It would have save me a lot of time and a lot of heartache had they just asked me long ago! Just remember that if he you will need to be with him 100%. Being gay is not easy sometimes. Hell, life is never easy, but this just makes it that much more of a challenge, so he will need you to be there for him.

Bring up the NJ gay rights case that just took place... tell him how you feel, and maybe he'll realize you accept it

Just tell him you know he is a beautiful person and you will accept him for who he is, no matter what. That your love is unconditional. Then tell him he can confide in you with anything and you do mean anything!

let him know you won't be disapointed in him...
