do statements like these that people use to identify themselves serve as blueprints of how to live? or are they instead convenient pigeonholes for lifestyles that identify us by who we are and how we live?

what's in a name?

Yes.

"I will NOT allow others to make me be or become the kind of person that I do not want to be." That's mine.

I do not engage in revenge. NEVER. That would simply poison my own life and mind. I live and learn, and walk on.

I will not engage in small-minded, petty quarrels. I walk away.

I do not let the opinions of others, or whatever they might say, govern my behavior.

I do not define my life by labels. Look at the huge number of people who call themselves "Christians" or "Democrats"! Lot's of variety, there! :-))

Labels confine, they do not define, in my opinion.

"A poem should not mean, but be." :-)) Archibald MacLeish

Good Question, patz! :-))

I live by the following: I am a human being. I know right from wrong. I am aware that people make mistakes, and will not hold them accountable. I do not believe in "An Eye For an Eye", even though it is in the Bible. I follow the "Live And Let Live" philosophy. I have to, really, since I ride a bike. Not to mention the fact that between me being a rather large person, and my military training, it would be very easy for me to lose my temper and badly hurt someone. Then "I" end up jail, even though they made the mistake. That just about sums up the way I live my life. Others should try it, it's good for the soul.

Have you never heard? that the whole world is a stage. people are for the most part pretentious, they are one personality at the work place, another at play, and yet another at home, and act like children when in their parents company again. Peopl that say " I am a Christain" I avoid for that reason, because they try for the most part to charm and disarm you till they get the chance to really con you. This is done in everyday business, pretending to be something so good that you will take their offer. Judge what and who they are by the results of their efforts, even when they fail, because this is human. Especially if they maintain humor, and are humble about it.

I live by the Nine Noble Virtues. And they are indeed a blueprint for life. I am an Asatruar and I am very proud of it!

Honour, Truth, Courage, Perseverence, Fidelity, Hospitality, Industriousness, Self Reliance and Discipline. Who wouldn't want those things as a blueprint for their life?

in my opinion these statements are how people wish they could live or how they want others to think they live.

I personally think the second option is closer to the truth.

Few are the people that actually live by their motto. And in any case even if one believes in what they say, no blueprint is without it's deviation.

They seem to answer more about the ideology a person uses to relate to the world in the statements above. Some are used to reflect how a person sees themselves and how they respond to the world around them. Me I'm fat and sassy loving every minute of it.

I live by a credo that depicts my personal standards for myself. It has no label except which I choose to place upon it.
