No Led Zeppelin were not Satanic. They made music which speaks for itself, and has enough quality not to need a gimmick. Satanism springs from the Catholic church, as it's a form of rebellion against that particular religion. That's why you're more likely to find American rock bands selling themselves as Satanists, because it's a form of rebellion for the youngsters, and lesser bands used it as a vessel for showmanship and to have a sensationalist aspect to their band.

Whereas in England (where Led Zep come from), the Church of England are the Establishment religion, so they're more likely to have had a Masonic slant to their music. Their approach to writing religious metaphor comes from their Establishment education, and the points of view their lyric show in relation to religion society, reflect their non-Catholic, C of E upbringing. The fact that they criticize the teachings of the Catholic church is not Satanism, but the Catholic church describes all anti-catholic, and all non-pro-catholic points of view, especially when expressed by famous folk, as being heresy, or satanist. It's a kind of knee-jerk retort, because they feel threatened when the masses (and their followers) question or contradict them.

Hope that helps. And remember, Satanism was invented by Catholics for and by disenfranchised Catholics, and is generally a safer way for their members to rebel and then return to the fold, (because they keep the same belief systems) than to question the concepts that Catholicism is based on, or to start thinking for themselves, and leave that mindset completely! And musicians like Ozzy Osbourne are no more likely to believe in the "Dark Prince" than Eminem is likely to believe that Michael Myers walks the earth!

no. jimmy page had an interest in the occult but he didn't practice satanism, he was just curious about it. led zeppelin wanted to build up a mysterious vibe, i guess you could say, around the band. they even went as far as to start rumors themselves to get the feeling of mystery around the band. i guess you could say it was a ploy to attrack fans to the band. and the whole stairway to heaven thing backwards is just a fluke. if you play anything backwards it sounds satanic.

Nope. They were into the occult and Page bought the Crowley mansions, which led many fundamentalists to assume they were Satanists. But as those of us with a brain know, occultist does not = Satanist.

People still seem to think Satanists go around practicing witchcraft and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Most Satanists subscribe to the "do as thou wilt" line of thinking, which is basically just humanism. There are nuts who take it literally, but those are mostly angry goth teens.
