The Country of the Blind is a short story by H. G. Wells. A climber finds a community of sightless persons who have been cut off from the outside world for a long time. He remembers the old adage that in the country of the blind the one-eyed man is king and believes that with the advantage of vision he will quickly rise to the top in this society. To his dismay he finds these people have no concept of sight and dismiss him as a lunatic. He has to adapt to their worldview. They agree to let him marry a girl he has fallen in love with if he allows them to remove the source of his irrationality - his eyes.

Internet searches will bring up all sorts of spurious attributions, but I'm trusting my source.
