The drains and plumbing website specifically addresses this issue with a good number of solutions. I really recommend it. Also the Queen of Clean has some good tips on making laundry smell good. One that I use is Borax in the wash water. I also use oil soap to get rid of bad stains. My parents water is horrible smelling and there are serious water issues where they live. Check the water quality by getting a report from your water provider.

Washing machines should occasionally be professionally cleaned -- the tub and everything are removed and scrubbed down. Soap/detergent residue, even under normal use, can cause a build-up on the inside of the washer's tub, and then that gooey stuff attracts dirt which can lead to some pretty nasty smells. The more often you over-fill your washer or use too much soap/detergent, the worse this problem will be. It is recommended to have the washer professionally cleaned every couple of years, and roughly after every 5th load of laundry you do, you should set the water level to maximum and run it empty with the hottest water temperature setting your machine has. The cost of professionally cleaning a washing machine is around $60 where I am.

It could be your water. Try adding a filter to your water line or a water softener unit. I have that problem occasionally because our water source is lake water & twice a year the lakes "turn over" creating a horrible taste & smell in the water. After it clears up I use baking soda to clean out my washer. Fill washer with HOT water & add a couple boxes of baking soda; agitate; then let set for a few minutes then let cycle continue. Be sure to wipe down all inside surfaces that water does not get to, inside of lid, inside eddges, etc. Good luck!

Could be a dirty hot water heater. Try a cold cold load and see if the clothes stink. Run your water and add a cup of vinegar then wash as usual. Your washer is not the problem.

if its always been that way its prob the water source, like well water...need a conditioning unit. if its a new thing, then run an empty load wiht strong bleach, stop it halfway thru the first draining and let it sit for half hour or so, then let it do the rest of the cycle.

could be the detergent you use or that you did not put in enough detergent. Or the water as the first answerer said.
