There are some good answers her and some misguiding.
The anaconda is generally known for the size and temperment. Both are correct. It can grow in excess of 30 ft and it is not generally a nice snake. They are mean by nature, but captive raised specimens can become docile, or tame.
They come from South America and three known species exsist. The most common being the green anaconda, the largest of the group.
They are not related to boas; they are boas, and as such, are related to pythons.
The name "anaconda" translates to "cow killer", not "elephant eater". There are no elephants naturally occurring in South America. And even the largest anaconda could not eat an elephant.
The green anaconda is the worlds heaviest snake, but the longest. That title goes to the reticulated python of Asia.
Thanks to Hollywood and some wild thinking producers, the anaconda is feared to grow many times reality and can produce havoc.
Such is not the case. They are not fast moving people hunting, snakes. They are really no different than any other snake in that respect.
They can, and do eat monkeys, caimen, and other animals, sometimes, yes, humans, too. But generally, they shy away from us.

The ones in the movies measure near 100 ft. Anacondas are real snakes in the wild being born at near 2 ft and within 5 to 6 years reaching up to 32ft at the longest. They are the largest snake over all and dwell mostly in the rivers of south america. An anaconda has never been historically recorded to kill a person EVER although there is one snake that measures longer than the anaconda it doesnt get quite as heavy. It is called a reticulated python getting up to 35 ft. It has been recorded to kill people in several occasions.

anacondas do exist! several vareities, no they dont get 100 feet long and hunt humans on purpose. they can get from 15 to 30 feet ( from what studies have found in wild and captive breeds) and is the second longest snake to be recorded next to the reticulated python. they are, however, the heaviest
