The original thought was to cut down on glare, but I think many do it as a part of a pre-game ritual

Football Players usually paint their cheeks black or another dark color depending on temperature. They paint there cheecks for two reasons. The first is to attract sunlight away from there eyes to help see in direct sunlight. The other is on cold days, the black or very dark purple is used to bring sunlight to the face so that the football players face will stay warm to regulate regular breathing.

It's to cut down the glare. You even see it on High School players, and even on younger midget league players.

Stops the light from relecting off of their cheekbones and blinding them from the glare. You can't draw light away from your eyes (guess some people don't know science too well).

cut down the glare. I use to do what John Randle did and paint it hardcore, then my varsity coach didn't like it and he wouldn't let me do it
