I have read it several times. It's a wonderful story about a woman who, after having a baby, becomes depressed (now, we'd call that post-partum depression). Her husband takes her to a country home and keeps her on bed rest in an upstairs room. She is bored to tears and stares at the wallpaper for weeks. Eventually, she goes crazy because of the wallpaper. BUT... since she is the narrator of the story... one has to wonder... can she be trusted to relay the story realistically? Can we really believe what she is saying? The best part of the story, imo, is at the end when she creeps around the room. Her husband sees her, and then faints (wuss) then, she creeps right over him, nonchalantly. It's hysterical!

It's a great story! It is really a critical commentary on the way women were at the time treated just before and after childbirth. It's also a scathing indictment of the way most men (including male doctors) viewed their women's childbirth traumas, most being completely insensitive to the waves of conflicting emotions they experienced. It's a plea to compassion for women in late pregnancy and very early motherhood.

Yeah, I've read it last term. It was a really creepy reading wasn't it? It's about a woman (the author herself) telling about how she went slowly mad under the oppresion of her husband. You should really check it out if you haven't read it yet. It's not long and it's pretty understandable.
