I'm a non-native speaker from Asia, I'm writing an essay concerning research paper.
I've totally no idea what a research paper is . I'm very confused.

Can anybody be nice enough to tell me something about this?

The key word is *research* -- it helps you learn how to find information, organize it, and explain it in your own words so that you and others can understand it or gain a new/unfound appreciation of it. It's all about improving your thinking, organizational, and writing skills. At the same time, you get to learn more about something because you have to research it.

A research paper is a write up of results from some research that someone has done. A lot of university student studying for their PhD will conduct some research in their field of knowledge. They will have an interest in something, develop a hypothesis and then research to write their thesis. The results are often used by companies or individuals for various reasons. I can't think of an example right now sorry. I hope you do well in your essay.

you go on-line, use the encyclopedia or any other resources, find information on the topic and write a paper about it using the information you found...that is a research paper, be sure to give credit to the source you have used..I'm writing one now :)
