This is a common misconception, The bread is NOT for everyone.

The bread is soley for he/she who orders food. If You are the only one who orders and the rest are just sitting there watching you eat, the bread is YOURS. Of course you aren't a jerk who will eat an entire basket of bread on your own when there are 3 others at the table.. But the bread is meant for the those who order a meal.

However, if one orders just a Salad and the rest order an entree` it is for everyone. It is for everyone eating a meal.

The bread is not a salad or soup accompaniment, it is traditionally used to cleanse the palate prior to eating the food in which is being served to you. More recently people think that it is an appetizer, but it's not - Generally the bread will fill you up more so than the rest of the food will.

If the bread basket is brought to the table before orders are placed it is for everyone. If it is brought to the person who ordered the salad it is probably intended for that person. BUT most people will share, and if the salad is a starter and not the person's only dish, then the bread should be shared.

Yeah it's for everyone it's an appetizer however if no one in your party knows that. THE BREAD IS ALL YOURS. Claim it for your salad. Fight for it.
