Yes most if not all laptops heat up due to their compressed size. What you want to do is to ventilate it by propping it on something so the air gets underneath the laptop. If you keep it well ventilated, it shouldn't catch fire. The only thing that I would thinnk would catch fire would be the CPU anyways.

Laptops are meant to get hot. If yours is getting so hot that you cant touch it, try and keep it ventilated. Otherwise it might be use full to invest in a usb laptop cooler. It is a stand with a built in fan that keeps the air flow over it

Most laptops are now in fact deemed "Notebooks" , I.E - not suitable for lap useage stupidly..
Unfortunate, but that's the way it is with manufacturers trying to cram in the latest and greatest technology into such a small device, all of those components create heat, and when it's in such a confined space...well, things heat up.

Mine usually gets quite hot, my advice would be to put it on a desk somewhere and keep the laptop on power save mode if you have to keep it on for a long time.

Mine gets quite warm but not so hot that you can't touch it. I like to nurse it when I'm cold.

It should only get hot if you have a dodgy Sony battery.
You could also be blocking the cooling fan inlet...........
