There is a debate going on which is the best. There is a line where you cross where nothing out there can use the power you have vs preparing for the future. Personally I wouldn't buy any card right now. The reason is that a new generation of cards is being released in early Novemeber. These cards will be DX10 compatable with all of the new technologies out there. They will be able to use all of capabilities of the new windows vista. I believe the highest end card will be the 8800GTX, there have been several rumors of it's price, anywhere from $410 all the way to $600. There wil also be a GS and GT version of the 8800.
Right now hoever, if you absolutly can't wait 3 weeks, you can buy either the 7950gx2, or the 7900GTX 512MB.
If you want the ultimate performance you should go with SLI, which is two video cards working together, although you don't double your performance it is faster.
the 7950gx2 has two gpu's on one card, so in SLI you get a quad gpu setup. So for the money you are spending for a quad gpu setup, is it worth it to you to claim to have the ultimate setup right now, that no game can take advantage of, just to have faster cards come out in 3 weeks. Some poeple have had faster setups though with two 7900GTXs in sli.
My advice in short is to wait until the next gen comes out.

eVGA e-GeForce 7800GT

The eVGA e-GeForce 7800GT ($390 street) distinguishes itself from the standard nVidia GeForce 7800GT reference design with a striking black graphic on the heat sink and higher clock rates for both core and memory. The 445-MHz core rate is about 11 percent faster than the 400-MHz default, and the 533-MHz (1,070-MHz DDR) memory rate is about 6 percent faster. Despite the overclocking, though, we saw no stability issues during testing, and core temperatures seemed in line with similar products.
