I'm running windows xp home edition and have not up or down loaded anything, that I'm aware of, to cause the os to take this extra time. I have a firewall and up to date anti virus spyware itp and a pop up blocker. any ideas. xp now takes about 10 mins to load.

go to 'run' and type in msconfig, this will show you what is running at start up, untick anything you dont want, this is most of the list except your firewalls, email etc and restart your computer. when it restarts click on the message not to show again.

Maybe spyware is slowing it down .
What you have described is a typical spyware attack
Spyware will slow your computer right down until it stops up completely.
Down load ad aware then run it and see what it finds .

It could be spyware that is slowing it down.

A good programme to downlaod free is adaware.

Thie will take away all the secret programmes watching what you are doing and slowing your computer down.

I use adaware it is good!

try checking the number of programs that are loaded during startup...
start-run...type msconfig
u'll get a window..go to startup and untick the programs that u dont want to load during startup...this'll improve the speed for startup.

If you're using Norton 2006, uninstall it and try something else.

If not, check for nasties by downloading Grisoft Antispyware.

You have not been feeding the mice that turn the wheels inside the machine, therefore they are running slower.

Mine was fast until I went on to Broadband. Now it is quite slow on start up.
I have noticed the same on friends units and they were on broadband.
