For some people of course, there is only really Rose to judge from. But the fact that there are sooo many more companions in the Doctor's long history shouldn't detract from the fact that Rose Tyler was almost ridiculously well written and a revelation in the playing by Billie Piper - very few previous companions would have had the freedom to deliver the line from "Rise of the Cybermen" - when clearly showing just a hint of jealousy that the Doctor has been talking to another waitress - "Well p'raps Lucy's a bit thick..."

She gave the show a vital kick of energy and connection with its new audience, and she'll stand the test of time among the so-called "great companions", such as Sarah-Jane Smith.

Among the others, I'd draw attention to Jamie McCrimmon - the highlander who stayed with Patrick Troughton's Doctor for almsot the entirety of his run, and Leela, Tom Baker's "savage", both of whom brought a humour and a humanity to the companion role and crucially, were natural fighters, who weren't always getting captured. Leela in particular had a fine way with a knife, and a temper to match, famously telling one assailant "Put a hand on me again and I'll cripple you!"

I think these three will truly stand the test of time, though I'd also give highly honourable mentions to Sarah-Jane and Romana for having an intellectual side and a curiosity that allowed them often to talk their way out of - or indeed into - situations where the "fighters" would never have survived.

I'd have to say Jo. She was one of the third doctor's companions. I remember watching repeats back in the 90s, and her character has always stood out in my mind.

Ace-simply because she wore a leather jacket and was a kid. However if you're talking about anyone who ever worked with the Doctor, its got to be K-9. What was that all about?! How the hell did he ever move anywhere, and so fast?!
