Basic premise is that it's an RPG in the Warcraft world of Azeroth, about 6 years after the events in Warcraft 3. The truce between Alliance and Horde (from Warcraft 3) has started to break down, there's remnants of the demonic Burning Legion to fight, and all sorts of other adventures.
worldofwarcraft.com and wowwiki.com can give a whole lot of info on the game. You can also get the game trailer from youtube.com or google video - that'll give a sense of what it's about too.
