The Loneliness One dare not sound --
And would as soon surmise
As in its Grave go plumbing
To ascertain the size --

The Loneliness whose worst alarm
Is lest itself should see --
And perish from before itself
For just a scrutiny --

The Horror not to be surveyed --
But skirted in the Dark --
With Consciousness suspended --
And Being under Lock --

I fear me this -- is Loneliness --
The Maker of the soul
Its Caverns and its Corridors
Illuminate -- or seal --

Hello again dear,
The width or breath of loneliness has no measurement as per the dark recesses of the mind. It is inescapable, and terrifying in its totality. The "Maker" of the soul could in fact be either an entity that is directly related to the malady, or in fact the Lord himself.
If that is so, he would be looked at as having the power to illuminate or seal, in other words "Living hell on earth within the power of the mind."

Of course, this is Emily Dickinson. She wrote this in 1862/ 63. Emily was desperately lonely and suicide her only escape in the end.
I am guessing this is a school project you are working on? I wish you loads of luck and please don't be frustrated that I am not giving you the answer - you will be amazed at how clever you are when you simply do some work on the poem. I won't give you the answer - but I will share some text analysis so that you can discover for your self what this is about.
Read the poem aloud, and look for words with a common theme- circle these. Now look for the antithesis of these words- underline these. Look for imagery and highlight these. Now read it all again and pay attention to the words that stand out from this exercise. It should become apparent what Emily was expressing.

well....its talking about how loneliness is so sinister...how it can't be interrupted and how the worst thing is if loneliness was found out...it's as if loneliness is personified...loneliness doesn't want the person it conquered to be discovered, loneliness is dissolved when 'scrutinized' or examined and searched for answers. this poem cud mean many things but to me...its describing loneliness as evil in a way...it tries to trap you, 'suspend consciousness'...'corridors sealed'...get it...its as if loneliness is death...

As someone who writes poetry, I think this is a poem by someone who is in a dark and very lonely place. And the poem itself is a description of the mind and feelings of this person and the place they are in. A poem doesn't have to rhyme or make sense to anyone other than the author, for it to be poetry.

this "poem" makes absolutely no sense. it's just a bunch of dribble written in poem form. I'll bet whoever wrote it thinks it's a very intelligent literary piece. it's garbage!
