Locutus, and which stance do you believe that to be. Regardless of political beliefs, the proverb stands. Interesting how you self professed intelligenza fall flat on your face everytime. A little bit of intelligence doesn't really go that far as you have proved.

Well Teddy Roosevelt other people have gotten that part right.
No I do not think our current President understands the meaning of that statement.I personally take it to mean explore all other options and do it sanely and reasonably and when all reasoning has failed then wallop them. However our current President, wallops, fumbles and fails.

Because somehow true Democrats and Liberals are really that much different. >_< Talk about having the head in the sand. I'll bet Dems and Liberals haven't even wondered why illegal immigrants and those too lazy to look for or have a job love them so much. It's because they think and know they will give them usually free handouts at the American workers expense. Liberals and Dems haven't given any motivation for people to get a job, or for illegals to leave this country. Instead, they base their whole campaigns around them. The buffoons are the ones on CNN and MSNBC. Obama attacked Fox News because it was 'a Republican mouthpiece'. Yet he didn't attack those 2 stations. Why? Because he knows they are a democratic/liberal mouthpiece. What a bunch of hypocrites. Democrats and Liberals like to play with the Constitution to the point it becomes null and void. Because if they didn't, this health care reform (the govt. going into and competing against the private sector) wouldn't be happening. But instead they would find ways to work with or give new policies to the existing companies. Look at all the countries that have big govts. and are doing well. What's that? There aren't any? Tell that to Dems and Liberals. Just because we live in the U.S.A. doesn't exempt us from the same failures.

Theodore Roosevelt
But the quote is wrong. Correct quote is "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."
He used the quote more than once. And it is an West African proverb

Do we as a people understand the meaning of the quote? Yes the president should understand it but so should we as a people.
Maybe if we practiced this then there would be less violence. Why? Because we would talk out our problems instead of resorting to violence like drive by shootings to solve our disagreements.
Remember in Africa there were wild animals everywhere. By speaking softly you could cut down on attracting the large animals attention. The large animals might want to attack the travelers but the stick would help the travelers defend themselves and go far on their journey.
At this is what I believe the original proverb means.

Locutus hit the nail on the head.
Yes, President Bush surely does understand. He tried diplomacy (except with the terrorists) and diplomacy failed. War is inevitable when diplomacy fails; hence, the big stick.

Teddy Roosevelt.
Yes that's what Bush does.
What does the leader of your country do?
Clinton talked soft and carried a little bitty stick.
Carter whispered and carried no stick.

Do you know that Teddy meant that we should use overwhelming force. He would have called the whole pack of you Liberals sissies over the Geneva convention ruse. You are quoting a man who was in direct opposition to your stance.
Here is a quote for you,"Better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.".
