There were African slaves in many Northern states at one time, as well. They just abandoned the practice somewhat earlier. Consider Missouri, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Maine, Connecticut to be "Southern" states? Well there were slave owners in those states in the 18th Century, though primarily for domestic work. The only real difference is that the plantation system of agriculture made slavery a more economically viable alternative in the Southern states, where it persisted too long.
And lest we forget the rest of us ... America was initially populated, in large part, by slaves or one kind or another. Indentured servitude was slavery without a retirement plan, and yet many of our ancestors were indentured. "Transported" criminals (for such heinous crimes as debt, unwed parenthood and politically unpopular ideas) made up a fair number of the population, as well.
I know popular American mythology likes to keep things real simple: "Southern = Slavery, Northern = Free", "the colonials were volunteers and adventurers, one and all". Yadda yadda yadda.
But the truth is somewhat less shining, and a whole lot more complex.
Now, if you want to know which states made up the Confederate States of America that seceded from the Union and waged Civil War in this country for years and years and years, killing more Americans than ANY war before or since, then use your search engine on "CSA" and you'll get a tidy list ... but it won't be a list of "all states ... involved in the African slave trade". That list would be a list of 13.

It depends on what you mean by involved. The southern states were the closest ports of call for example Norfolk, Va.,Charleston, SC, New Orleans, La. had sea ports where the ships from Africa could unload the slaves, however if you mean which bought and sold slaves, almost all states did pre civil war. Northerners would send their agents to the southern states and bring them up north from auctions. After the civil war was over, Maryland and Pennsylvania for example, northern states were granted a long time extension to free their own slaves, while the south had none.

All of the original 13 colonies were involved. The southern colonies were the ones who had the most slaves, but even the New England area had some slaves. So, no colony was exempt from the slave trade.

Every single state, direclty or indirectly, was responsible for the slave trade. The south directly, the border states tangentially, and the northern states where they processed goods and consumed things from the south. People became rich off of it all over the country. Plus a "state" is never involved in such a thing: it is private organizations and evil people. If you watch Amistad, you'll see that they landed in Boston.
