Cats usually do better being home all day by themselves if you work...and have a litterbox to use inside. The downside is, most cats are so independent that you may not feel the "love", and you have to clean the litterbox.

I'm against any animal "roaming", or being outside all day (or night). So, I'm assuming this is a housepet.

Ok, how much time would you have to spend with a dog? Dogs have to have play time and they are dependit on there masters. Unlike the independet cats. Cats can spend a good while alone and not destroy anything. Dogs might chew up stuff, etc. I am more of a dog lover but if you have alot of time and you think that you can handle a dog, get a dog. If not, get the cat. Cat's have to have litter boxes, and things like that. Dogs just need a good home, and plenty of exercise.
Hoped this helped!
Good Luck!

If you work nights and sleep days or just because they bark.
Have to be taken for walks How much time do you have to spend? My friend has a chawawa and it barks gets her up at night and has to go outside to the tiolet thing.
I have a cat, and it sleeps with me when ever I choose to sleep.
Never makes a noise if it claws the furniture you can have the claws removed, I would before I would get rid of Sam who has been fixed. But he never claws the furniture. Takes me a few seconds to clean the cat box and he doesn't go out and bring in dirt, fleas and other things. You can get waterless shampoo.
and they are not a nusiance when you have company.
Her dog drives me crazy. But for her he is worth the trouble.
I read in a book train a cat with a water squirt gun.
If he claws furniture he got a squirt, they hate water, if he jumps on the table he got a squirt. Now he never does those things.
Kinder than pulling out his claws.

It depends on your lifestyle. If you aren't home a lot, get a cat. Dogs need walking and they need to be let outside. They also can develop behavior problems if left alone without some sort of companion. Cats don't have to be let out or walked and most thrive off of small amounts of human attention. If you are home a lot, take your pick. Both are great!

Cats are easier to take care of and like to sit on your lap and be petted. Cats are easier to be made an inside animal, but changing the litter box can cause you to have allergies to the litter box smell.
If you have plenty of space and can walk a dog when they need to go potty then get one from a shelter. The mixed breeds make good pets but be prepared to to walk them through all kinds of weather.

Get a dog!! They're very affectionate and loyal, and won't go roaming outside like cats.

depending how much you are at home ...a puppy needs a lot of tlc and training when young a kitten on the other hand pretty much takes care of itself.. If you dont have the time and patience it takes for a puppy then maybe the latter will do...
