They are your social friends. There are many types of friends. you might be attractive and they like the people you attract to them. You might have money and they like your generousity. if this type of friendship is not want you want, then learn to say No, and go with someone else that gives you the emotional support you need.

Single-purpose friends are a puzzle aren't they? Whether they are, indeed friends, depends on the definition you use. More importantly, do they add what you need from friends to your life and you to theirs?

Yes. They do it because you are fun to be with.....unless of course you finance the night out, then they are not friends.
