In what sense- in an essay- if it is- reference it as a footnote!!! Sorry if I am not understanding your question.

If you want to use it to justify what you have said or make reference to it within an essay- you just make your statement within the essay and depending on how many times you have made reference to legislation or a case you number it in accordance:

So say you have mentioned no cases or legislations yet: you make your statement:

"xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" and put 1 at the end then in Word. choose add footnote and it will put a 1 at the bottom of the page and write "Data Protection Act 1998"

Hope this makes sense

Your statement requires clarification. I presume you are referring to the Data Protection Act, which can be examined in all reference sections of Public Libraries. Unless you are actually around 12 years of age, please don't begin a sentence with the word "hey"!
