This is an interesting Question, Mainly because its like any other electrical device, when you turn any componet it on there is a power spike thus for putting a loads on diodes and circuitry, in acyual test 2 televisions were purchased of the same type at the same time one was plugged in and left on constantly the other used normaly the one that was left on constantly out lasted the other, i use stand-by another reason to note why do you think computers have a standby mode anyway, pluss most new keyboards have a sleep hot key, my Computer has been on for about 16 months now,

I think you should turn it off every night. What is the use of having it on if you are not using it anyway? I do leave mine on stand by during the day if I plan to come back to it within a couple of hours. If not, I always turn it off. If the power goes off, it could damage something, and I tell you this from experience. So I recommend that you turn it off.

A simple question with a complicate answer. Basically, though, it is a matter of personal preference.
If you are running Unix, Linux, BSD, or Macintosh, you probably never really need to turn off or restart your computer. A Windows-based machine will need regular restarts to keep it happy.
If you are concerned about electricity costs, I recommend shutting down or, in Win XP, you could use hibernate. If you need the computer to be able to be up and running quickly, standby would be a better choice.
Either way, remember to clean out your computer at least yearly and provide adequate external ventilation to prolong the life of your equipment and increase your system's efficiency.
Good luck!

I have been told by my computer repair man to turn off the monitor, and leave on the PC.
To continually turn off the PC each time you use the it or each day will cause havoc, and the end result (this happened to my friend) is a total loss of the mother board.
Which means 'purchase' a new computer.
That's what was advised to me. It may depend on your kind of computer, do you have a manual to check? or the company to call?
good luck

i have a college friend who majored in computers
she told me its not good to turn the computer on and off because every time you turn it on (which was pretty frequent in my family)
she said something inside of the computer slides around(i don't know phsically or electricity like)
and then when you turn it off it has to slide back to its original place but if that becomes too frequent it can't slide around as well causing problems such as computer being slow down
also she said the electricity usage doesn't differ much as long as you hibernate or stand by since they don't use much electricity anyways

After watching TV do you leave it on or turn it off?
After reading a book do you leave it open or close it?
After waking up for a long time do you sleep or no?
If the answer to any of the above questions is yes then turn your computer off completely!

completely a personal preference
todays computers handle staying up for years without problems.
however in the interest of conserving energy you can put it on standby. i havent switched off my mac in months.
