I'd have to say yes. I've been a AVG grisoft user for years and I have no complaints so far. I've also recommended the product to all my family and friends.
It has a remarkably stable intergration with the windows XP. and frequently updates its virus definition files.
However, in addition to AVG, i suggest you also download protection for spywares/adwares/malwares. I suggest lavasoft adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html). Moreover, I highly recommended that you install a firewall like zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp)

Well, my brother had a pretty serious virus. It wouldn't even let him boot to safe mode. I did the repair-reinstall Windows for him and scanned with AVG. It found some viruses but not this mother of a virus. Everytime he'd reboot his computer, it would be stuck again and I'd have to reinstall Windows again. Finally, I told him to get McAfee. No reason except I figured if you pay for something, it had to work. I didn't have an opinion about AVG at the time. After the install of McAfee, you have to reboot, so I had to reinstall Windows again. But after that I was able to scan with it and it found the virus and got rid of it. It found 150 viruses, so my brother was in need of serious help. I've heard AVG was fine, but for something serious, I guess it just wasn't good enough.

Yes. I have used AVG-free for three years. It runs daily, and updates itself as needed. It has kept my computer free of viruses, especially the backdoor trojan viruses. It is the best free antivirus program you can use. The only one I use. It is better than Norton or McAfee in my opinion. I have used both of them in the past but half the time they didn't find all the junk lurking in my computer. Another good program is Spybot, and this is also free. As far as I am concerned, these are the best programs on the internet and absolutely free to use. Try it and I think you will agree.

In my spare time I test all antivirus/spyware programs to see if they perform as claimed. Most important to use my own state of the art technology to see if they have embedded adware, spyware, or trojans in the free or purchased versions.
"AVG", in my opinion uses to much of your resources. Plus being that it is free, they don't update frequent enough to keep your pc secure.
I use in both of my computer http://www.avast.com This free for home use is excellent state of the art technology that is light years ahead of any free or purchased antivirus program.
They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After the one year you must request a new key. Please download their free home for personal use. Their corportate version is 100% the same, they just make corporate pay for each download.
This program as one of the very best background realtime guard that really works an scans in the background. (uses little or no resources). The background guard in real time will find and hidden embedded trojan or virus the second you open a webpage with one hidden in the webpage. Will advise u via voice & popup in your tray. Does an automatic clean/destroy.
Plus you get atleast twice or three times per day automatic updates. The support is excellent. In my opinion this software for out performs any other free or purchased antivirus.
Please know that you can only use one antivirus program, or you will have serous conflict with your system. You can use three or four antispyware programs without any conflict.

I use it and haven't had any virus problems since installing.
Friends who use AV software that they have actually paid for have had problems in the same period.
