I was in labor 26 hours with my first. I had dialted to a 2....2 weeks before and did not feel that at all. I did not feel much most of the time in the dialation department, but a lot when it came to contractions. I am not going to kid you and tell you they don't hurt, because they do. The good thing is that they go away. Now think of passing a baby though your body...think of when you have had a poop that is really large and it hurts your bottom, now think if was 12x as big. Thats what it feels like to give birth.
Now think of the way you feel when you are feeling love....now multiply that x 100 and thats how you feel when you hold that child...when the child says I love you mommy...when the child goes to school. Its the best feeling in the world. There is no love that can have ever experianced that would be anything what your going to feel once that baby is born. You may have some depression and that comes a little later...but its there.

well, contractions are what make you dialate, so yes I guess you can feel yourself dialate in that sense. You wouldn't be able to tell that you have dialated at all except by a pelvic exam and that should only be peprformed by the doctor. I couldn't feel the baby coming out or any other contractions because I had an epidural, but it hurt very very much up until I had the epidural.

No, you can not feel yourself dialating. Every birth is different even for the same woman. It does hurt very bad and the pain is difficult to describe. I can tell you for me it did not feel like a period or taking a poop. Epidurals to help tremendously but unlike some woman on here I did still feel some pain and I definately felt some pain and of course alot of pressure when they were coming out. It is alot of work giving birth to a baby but you will be fine. Good Luck.

checking your cervix is more painful rather than contractions..
When you feel 3 x of back pain, constipation, dismenoria at the same time with the 60 second interval or more, let them bring you at the hospital..
Mine, because I had my first baby so I have no experience at all. I gave birth to my son 3 weeks earlier to my estimated due date. My husband bought an ice cream the evening before I gave birth, and I think I ate a lot.. At 11:00 pm I feel that I am having constipation..I went to the bathroom, but nothing is coming out only pee.. Then it repeats every 10 minutes at first..then I saw a pink blood followed by brown blood and a pain last for 60 seconds with several repetition. He brought me to the hospital and the doctor checked it and he said, anytime soon I will deliver the baby. She measured my cervix every 1 hour to check how many centimeters and the first check was really painful ..then after that its just nothing.. Then after 5 hours of labor, the doctor said I need to push..I've had a hemorrhoid because of the wrong push. They also made an episiotomy
just to vacuum the baby to be able to get out.. She said my water already broke and I didnt know about it.. Then when I see my baby,,,all the pain goes away..
Just relax..think this way..almost all the women of the world deliver a baby...if they can do it, why cant you?
Dont do the epidurial...it is very dangerous because of the spinal cord.. Even doctor didnt give me one, even I am asking too.
You can bear the pain, you just need to be strong..Goodluck!

My labors, for the most part, have felt like the kinds of pains you get with gas, up until the head starts to leave the uterus, entering the birth canal- pushing stage. Then the contractions are strong and hurt. As the baby's head moves down, there's a feeling of pressure, almost like you have to use the loo. When the baby's head crowns, there's a whole lot of pressure and what feels like a lot of heat from the skin stretching.
Recommendation- Don't think about it, don't worry about it (at least try) and let your body do what it needs to do. Most of your labor you should be able to walk around. Gravity helps get the little one downward. That is, unless you opt for an epidural and are confined to bed. Your choice, though.

Lucky you! With my first baby (10 years ago), although I was prepared like you, the doctor never did ask me. She just went ahead and cut. While I was offended that she didn't ask, it really wasn't a big deal. I've had two more kids since then, and I have torn along the old scar line both times. I have heard that it is heals faster when an episiotomy is done, but there are arguments for allowing it to tear, too. To answer your other question: yes, I think it is extremely common for a woman to either tear or need an episiotomy, so you are wise to think about it in advance.

from experience i would say get the epidural and TRY not to get induced...I think being induced is worse than natural. Of course, as everyone said, not all women are the same, and you could feel 0 pain versus the extreme pain I felt. But I would do it again 100 times over to have my daughter. Dilating is painful, since you feel contractions when you dilate, and at the end is when it is MOSt painful since you feel them closer together. Don't be scared, just trust your body, and get pain medicine if you need it. Good luck!

i had gotten an epidural since they had to induce me. i was 42wks and only dialated to 1 cm. i had labor for about 5 hours the contractions started hittin hard around the 3rd hour then my water broke then they gave me the epidural. after that i was basically fine i didnt feel any contractions. i didnt even feel them puttin their hands inside to feel if i dialated. then at 8 cm they something was wrong wit the baby heart beat it was either due the cord being around his neck or arm. so they told me to push . i pushed then i smelled something. my *** took a dump on the table. then right after that they said he's coming. i say i pushed through 3 contractions and he popped right out. i felt him plop out though due to my epidural startin to go away. but i was fine though and u'll be fine. but honestly i woulda went crazy through all that pain if i didnt have that epidural.
p.s. make sure ur man is there cuz mine was so helpful dont think i could handle doin it by myself.

I was much too focused on the pain to feel anything down below. Contractions feel like mega period pain. And the baby coming out felt like when a huge poo comes out only much stronger.

Hon..it varies from woman to woman and from one pregnancy to the next.
My girlfriend felt nothing, and thought she really just had to go to the bathroom REALLY bad....and delivered the baby in the elevator in the hospital. It was her first one.
The woman in the room with me had her 5th child, was in labor 36 hours, and thought she was delivering "Alien".
Mine was somewhere in the middle. Labor wasn't pleasant, but delivery was quick.
Take a deep breath and relax. Women have been doing this successfully for years and years, and in this age most of us have excellent medical care. Odds are in your favor that you'll be fine, and so will the baby.
Quit fretting...you will go into labor...you will go through delivery...and at the end you'll have this tiny person who ultimately grows up into this annoying person wants to drive the car, date inappropriate people, wants an allowance, and drives you nuts. (*hug*)
