The link in the source box is excellent and should answer your question. Remember that the law in Scotland and N.Ireland may well be different to that in England and Wales.
In England and Wales (the ones that I know) various ages:
16 + for a girl to have sex
16+ for a man to have homosexual sex
17+ to be an adult for crime purposes
16+ to get married with parent's consent
18+ to get married without parent's consent
10+ to be guilty of a crime but between 10 and 14 it must be shown that you knew that what you were doing was wrong, not merely naughty.

Age of sexual consent is 16, and the age to vote, drink, buy cigarettes is 18. Strange that, you can go out and have sex with a 40 year old man at 16, calf out a kid, get a council house, and gov't support, but you can't buy a pack of smokes, or a case of beer, legally. I wonder if we have our priorities screwed up. The thing that completely retards any future possibilities and opportunities is what you only have to be 16 to do. Maybe the gov't likes having people on the dole, with a limited future. Highest teenage pregnancy rate in all of Europe after all, that's something we should be proud of. Not.

The age of consent for sexual intercourse and medical intervention is 16. People may be married at the age of 16 with their parents' or guardians' consent. People may purchase tobacco when they are aged 16. People are allowed to attend cases in criminal courts at the age of 14 (otherwise than as defendants or witnesses). For most other purposes, one has to wait until one is 18 to do as one pleases.

its 16 and well basically if the woman is under 16 then it doesnt matter what age the man is, he still gets charged for underaged sex (even if hes younger than her!!) this system is sooo sexist who agrees??

16 for driving, sex, school leaving, smoking, marriage.
18 for drinking, taking part in pornography, i.e getting your photo taken nude.
