I’m feeding my Filly 4 squares off of a square bail of hay and a 2lb coffee can full of grain a day. (is this enough grain and hay?) If I put all of her daily hay in a hay sack in the morning she is ready for more when I go out in the evening to feed her. She is not wasting it. Will she over eat? I don’t want to make her sick.
I don’t have much experience with colts, my husband does and he is out of town for 2 weeks.

Yes they will definitly overeat as a horse will eat as long as food is in front of it, but what you are feeding it sounds about right. You don't say what kind of grain you are feeding but the main thing is to watch her and see how it is affecting her.........does she look about right , is she too skinny to fat. If she is ok then you are on the right path if she is to skinny then maybe go to 1 1/4 can in the morning and the same at night, never increase more than a double handful at one time, if she is getting to fat then cut her down by 1/4 of a can at a time. As for the hay I agree with the previous response you got and maybe give it to her twice a day instead of once. Everyone feeds their horses different but our 11 month old colt gets a full bale of hay a day plus his grain. Remember though although she might "seem" hungry if you are feeding her regular she isn't she is just eating out of boredom.

there are many good complete feeds on the market made by and/or endorsed by professionals. I would choose one of the mare and foal or the growth feeds instead of the oats. Oats do not digest efficiently and, though the horses love them are not a very good source of nutrition, especially for a growing horse. A foal should eat about 20 pounds of food a day. It is a good idea to spread that in two feedings. Choose another supplement besides the oats though and choose one that has a good protien percentage as well as fat Your foal should have nice cover on the tail, hips and ribs. The coat should be shiny. The hooves should have a good color and not have any circular lines or heat in them. If you check your horse daily, you should notice if any of these conditions are not met and you may want to ask your vet for a different diet plan.

yes, you are feeding her way to much. my family owns a 7mos old filly too and we feed her 1/2 an alfalfa flake and a little over 1 scoop of pellets per feeding. And even with all of this feed she is still a little overweight.. but she's extremely healthy.

Sounds good but I'd give her two blocks in the morning and two blocks when she comes in for the evening.

They will over eat and get colic but I don't think you are overfeeding her.
