The axiomatic intent of certain echelons of brand name corporations will seek qualities of the best, brightest and obedience, from academic institutions to sustain high staff turnovers. This is a tenable proposition to head moguls leading the charge of promises of dividends and profit to meet shareholders expectations. The act of scouting is also played up to portray socially responsible corporate citizens, over that of hiring from, say Mexico, China and India.
Scouting for trainees in universities, as with poaching from existing corporations, must be tempered and regulated. Agents of companies will use Machiavellian methods to paint the hiring corporation in the best possible light, whilst down playing less desirable qualities of the nature of work and the people that run the system.
Proactive universities or similar institutions, should engage to understand where, who and what these salesmen of corporate hires represent. In such absence, it comes down to the fiduciary duties of the parents of the students to lend guidance. Peer exchange, although useful and probably current, is insufficient alone, with the Blind leading the blind.
Industry first hand knowledge, university and parent networking, with a review and correction process by interns supported by university faculties, provides a better encompassing approach to safeguard the interest of a fresh graduate (the students), from the often potentially Machiavellian hiring processes. Where scouts gain commission from successful applicants, what is disturbing is the less known subsequent history of head hunted employees.
Where university courses require internships of medical and architectural professions, this perhaps, could be a starting point for a feedback system.
Selection is a two way process. Where the scout chooses based on their best profiles, universities intending to offer the best to their students and retain old boys network, should apply no less diligently, their choice of acceptable companies.
The only wisdom here is, people first, everything else second.
As to where “right” and “trend” is concerned, that is for society and the emerging youth who will replace anachronistic systems, to decide.
