This is one of those two pronged questions.

Yes in many ways it has helped criminals. They now have better ideas of what can be detected and how to get around it.On the revers side of the coin, it may well deter a lot of petty crime ( not drug related) as the criminal knows there is a far higher chance of being caught out.

Far worse is that it has given Joe Public unreasonable expectations of what the Crime Scene Officer can do. It makes people sloppier in their personal safety care. It also leads to general dissatisfaction when the local "Soco" doesn't come up with the appropriate tools for the job as evidenced by TV.

Generaly speaking, given adequate resources and funding, the police will always be ahead of the game crime wise. Unfortunately, this isn't often the case. Reality dictates that DNA testing for example will be back logged for up to three months and there is no budget for all the amazing machines and chemical complexes you see used on the TV crime shows.

Plus it has to be said, that if a Soco turned up to a crime scene dressed in a pair of high heels and with flowing locks , they would soon get the boot!

I'm sure it has, but justice usually prevails in the end, as most criminals get just that bit to greedy and eventually get caught.

Course it does - it just shows them how NOT to get caught, so they'll find ways to get better!!! (This applies to the factual AND fictitious shows).
