Man-kind, is, in the long run, a rather stupid race. At one point we had the possibility of being able to advance our technology and civilization to reach that point, one day; however we have destroyed our own chances by wasting time with wars, nuclear bombs, atomic bombs, and creating a hole in the Ozone. These things are going to turn against us, in that they've shortened the time that life will be able to survive on the planet. If we hadn't made the hole in the Ozone layer there's a chance that in a millennium or two we may have been able to reach 'C-Speed' -- Speed of Light -- travel. However, now all our future descendants' time will probably be spent trying to fix our mistakes.
Also, on the subject of Aliens - There is no proof that Extraterrestrials exist, let alone on a technological scale higher than ours. It's entirely possible - it's a big cosmos - but highly unlikely, given how long it would take to reach some stars. It would take hundreds of years, travelling at the speed of light, to reach even the closest stars. Consider that it would take One Year to reach a stare one Light Year away, and factor in that the nearest stars are hundreds of light years away...
In my personal opinion, though, Intelligent Alien Life has already proven its existence by not contacting us. Can you image what we would do to alien life forms, or their planet, all in the name of 'Science'?

Good question!
There is so much debate on this as evidenced by the various responses here, but the bottom line is we are still in a state of evolving.
Who knows what insignificant little scientist guy in his lab looking for something else, doesn't come up accidentally with a formula that will lead the way to breaking the speed of light?
It might not happen in our lifetime, but you just never know.

In the next 25 to 50 years we will develop computers and supporting technology so powerful we will be able to scan and copy our minds to computers. This will vastly increase our intelligence and the pace of advancement and quite likely we'll know how to send our minds out into the galaxy at the speed of light. At that speed we will get to every star in the galaxy in 200,000 years.

Well first of all human beings can't travel at the speed of light because as your speed increases so does your mass. So if you were traveling at the fastest possible speed (light speed) you'd become infinitely massive (which isn't possible). The only reason light can do it is because it's energy and therfore has no mass.

predicting the feasibility of future technologies, that are not based on available scientific knowledge, is the territory of daydreamers.
before the end of the 21 century we will be able to inspect earth size planets circling distant stars and determine whether they have the conditions for life and even if they have something similar to life.
the physics for a near light speed vessel is beyond our level of science, but who knows what will be discovered.

to travel in the speed of light is impossible and prove impractical. all inter-stellar travel are just sci-fi based! even to travel into the nearest star system in the speed of light needs 13 years! (pls do not think about hybernation as human are not capable of doing so) and it would cost the world economy to fund that type of voyage.
BUT! scientist are looking at another way to be able to travel to the nearest star system in mere minutes, which is to fold space to cause the parallax of your ship to be near the final destination.
sorry i can only explain it in such a way, but for more info pls refer to stephen hawking's book (pls also dont ask me which book title, i just pick them up and read them)

It is in possible to travel at the speed o light because, the faster you go, the more you weigh. So, to go as fast as light, you would need to add more fuel, therefore increasing the weight!

maybe in 1000 years ... first we are going to destroy our planet by are carelessness with the ecology and with war based off of greed and lust for power ... this will bring mankind close to extinction and kill our progress probably through one more major world war and the accompanying further damage to ecosystems worldwide .... then possibly those who survive may progress slowly to gain back the technical ability to further progress into space exploration but it will be in several centuries in my opinion ... and that is IF we dont damage our planet to the point we extinct ourselves over the next few decades ....

maybe when 3/4 of the helium of sum got to use and the earth becomes more hotter and hotter because it is believe Speed xHeatxlight speed=light speed/year

in short maybe when mankin learn to use the occupation and the usage of vacumm that can posses 1.23 light speed
