Calculus is a central branch of mathematics. The word stems from the nascent development of mathematics: the early Greeks used pebbles arranged in patterns to learn arithmetic and geometry, and the Latin word for "pebble" is "calculus."

According to Encyclopedia Britannia, "About 15 BC, the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius mounted a large wheel of known circumference in a small frame, in much the same fashion as the wheel is mounted on a wheelbarrow; when it was pushed along the ground by hand it automatically dropped a pebble into a container at each revolution, giving a measure of the distance traveled. It was, in effect, the first odometer."
These odometers were used in taxi carriages. Each time the wheel of the carriage turned, a pebble, a calculus, dropped from a container into another. In the end of the ride, the driver counted how many pebbles had dropped, and that determined the price of the transportation. This kind of usages of pebbles gave the word Calculus its present meaning.

The meaning of calculus is SMALL ROCK in latin. Ancient scholars often wrote in latin. Calculus was disputedly invented by Issac Newton. ya the guy you though 'discovered gravity' The fact is that what Issac newton (and Leibniz) invented was a system of math to further explain movement. Calculus deals with concepts that had never before been introduced into the world. The debate about Limits continued long after the orignal publications of calculus.
The ideas surounding gravity existed long before issac newton. Galleleo who died within days of Newtons birth (depending on the callendar you use) had already calculated the rate at which objects fall to earth. 16t^2. Calculus went way beyond that. Using thier new found math they could even approximate gravity on other planets and a whole slew of things.
I recomend researching more about Issac Newton. You will learn all kinds of things about calculus.
