Everytime I enable WEP on my Netgear router it says the wireless connection is not available with a red 'x' next to the PC (with a signal coming out of it). When I take WEP off there is a connection. However, in both cases I am able to connect to the network with my laptop. I need to enable WEP, any ideas? Thanks.

Question's a bit confusing but it sounds like you're trying to connect your PC to the router via wireless.
First thing you should do if you have windows XP is disable windows firewall. It sucks and just gets in the way. Make sure you click the "Advanced" tab in this and uncheck the wireless network connection. This ensures that your wireless connection is not firewalled.

Next, right click on the wireless networks in the sys tray and select "View available wireless networks". Refresh the list. You should see your network appear if it's active. If WEP is enabled when you click connect it should ask for the security key. Enter the key you set on the router.

Occasionally wireless connections with windows don't connect immediately even after previously being connected. Try selecting repair from the menu when you right-click the icon in the system tray.

Also, remove your ethernet connection from the PC if there is one as you'll get a conflict of interest when the wireless router tries to assign an IP address.

Hope this helps

You have to first enable WEP on the router .Write down the numbers/letters generated, Then go to your computer and open up the program to connect to the router.
If you have a laptop with a radio card already installed then all you have to do is right click the little computer ICON at the bottom right of the screen,
Click STATUS click VIEW WIRELESS NETWORKS. Choose your Network ,I take it you have given the network a name, Find this name Then click CONNECT
You will then be asked for the Key which is the WEP password to get into the router .Write this in and then click connect.

DON'T enable WEP!!!

Hackers can get into your Wireless Network!

DO USE WPA!
I watched The Real Hustle on BBC Three and I saw them hack into a Wireless Network.
BEWARE!!

hi, maybe you are using different WEP type, I mean your laptop is WEP 128 and the router is 64, other wise some model of wireless router or access points are compatabile to each other, where they use a non standered WEP keys
