I had my PC fixed a couple of days ago and as a part of the reparing process, they installed some additional things on it such Internet Explorer 7 and the Service Pack 2 for my Windows XP Home Edition. As a result, my printer needs to be reinstalled, but it keeps giving me this message that due to some error, it is unable to install the printer driver. I tried to download the latest one from canon's website. Didn't help. I'm running it through a USB port as I used to do before. When I turn on the printer during the installation, the "new hardware found" message appears, so the printer seems to communicate alright. Please, help!

Most printers do not need drivers installed in Win. XP.
Try just hooking up the printer and see if you get a "new hardware found" message and if so it will follow with a message "device ready to use" -or- Insert Disk.

Make sure that you have completed clean the pc of the old driver. You shouldn't have your printer plugged in until you have installed the drivers as windows xp will try to install its own drivers and make a hash of it so unplug the usb cable. install the drivers. once the drivers are successfully installed you can now plug the printer usb cable back into the pc and this time hopefully it should work.

The important thing is that you must have the old drivers removed first.

Download the updated XP diver from canon.com here is the link:

when everything is up and running, do a print head cleaning since your printer has probably not been used in a little while. This will clean out any debris that has form in the print head.
