Is he an introspective male? If so, Life of Pi.

You could go the non-fiction route and get him a book dealing with History. Something like a book dealing with

The Titanic
Ships
Presidential Books
History of the World
World Wars
Music
Military
Theatre

Many of the men I know are fans of the following:

- "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkein
- "A Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Lermontov
- The Hornblower series (the first is "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower") by C.S. Forster
- The Aubrey/Maturin series (and I can't to save my life remember the name of the first one) by Patrick O'Brien
- Anything by Chuck Palahniuk (personal favorites include "Lullaby" and "Choke")
- Anything by Philip K. Dick (I really like "Our Friends From Frolix 8," "Eye in the Sky" and of course "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?")
- The Xanth series by Piers Anthony (I can't stand these; the humor is very middle school and the characters don't really come out for me. However, a friend of mine has recommended them highly)

I hope this helps!

Really depends on personal taste but anything by Robert Ludlum, Ian Rankin or John Grisham usually goes down well.
Just finished "Fox Evil" by Minnette Walters and thought it was great! Might be a bit too 'English', though.....
Look at the 'blurb' and see what you think.

Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy series that your friend might like. The title of the first episode is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If your friend is a fan of Conan, LOTR or other epic adventure tales, this is one he should enjoy. A Hollywood producer said it was, "Like Braveheart meets Lord of the Rings." (See other comments & reviews below.)

Good luck, whatever you decide to get!

Jon F. Baxley (Author, Editor, Ghostwriter and Proofreader)

THE SCYTHIAN STONE (eBook only)
THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (eBook and hard cover)
THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming fall '07)

Major Media Reviews:

Publishers Weekly

STARRED Review. A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages.
