The best ones that are also used by a lot of recording studios are Tannoy bookshelf speakers. These can be purchased from a reputable dealer. There are of course other makes, but it's best to go and listen to them at a dealers through a system similar to your own at home. That way you get the speakers that sound good and pleasing to you. hope this helps you.

There is a problem. Your old Technics have a woofer to give you the low-end sounds. Bookshelf speakers do not have woofers. They expect you to have a separate subwoofer to handle these sounds. This means you need book shelf speakers + a subwoofer. Also - how can you use 2 tower speakers for movies which are 5.1? What type of amp or receiver are you using? Are you watching old standard def (which is stereo) or HDTV and just using the 2 Technic speakers in a mix of speakers to give you a 5.1 system? You have left so many details out - we cannot give you a good answer. (sigh) In general: * Ignore specs on the speakers. This is like reading the ingredients in soda and deciding what tastes better. * Learn the names of companies that make speakers as their main business and only buy these. There are dozens of companies like Polk, Energy, Klipsch, Definitive, Boston, ... etc. so this is not hard. * If you are doing a 5.1 setup - all 3 of your front speakers should match: left, center, right. Try to get bookshelf speakers that you can later add a center to from the same make and model. * In truth - for movies you can have a great sound system made from less accurate (read 'cheaper') speakers. Music is harder to reproduce and decent music speakers cost a lot more. * Avoid the crappy left-over speakers from some 'box' system. You can sometimes find these for $50 but they are crap and will damage your amp. They are only designed to work with the skinny receiver that came with the set. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't do it. You'll regret it. I replaced my floor speakers with smaller ones, and had changed back within a week. Despite all the advertising blurb they (the bookshelf) speakers just don't compare. Save the money.

You may try different Bose speakers. I think they're fine for book shelf type speakers.
