it's a mixture of all the above answers. to me, fear is when you don't trust. yourself or others. i think, if we could take time at least in trying to trust ourselves or even others, we would at least save us from all the stupid agony and useless fearful thoughts.
in the bottom line, we must learn to tell ourselves "whatever will be will be" (and be content with it)

Hi,

Well if we fear fear, failure, past bad experiences itself, so always hope for the worst then you are well off in the end but prepare yourself for the worst. Believe me that is what i do now after losing my job being rejected by a girl i loved, havin an nagging uncurable sinus 24/7, i have no hope or anything for the future just living life for the sake of it also considering suicide!

I would advice watching movies like - catch me if you can, boiler room.

C ya.

because our brain either relates to the action, such as jumping off a high diving board into a pool, some people can and some could never. Also like watching a scary movie, your brain processes that as something out of the norm, and it scares your inner being. Then I believe as you get older, and are exposed to many different things, like seeing bad stuff on the news, especially if your raising kids, your fears of what could happen kicks in, cause' it's something the brain doesn't want to think about....sorry if this sounds a bit dorky, but it's hard to put stuff into words sometimes...

Interesting question. I would think it is nature's way of getting us to react quickly to things that are bad for us e.g. snakes. or changes in our environment which could suggest hidden danger.
As we have become increasingly divorced from the natural world, this has spilled over into other areas of our lives where we face the different, unknown, or challenging such as a new job. an interview, or someone from a different culture/area.
In this way fear can become unhelpful

The human race has spent much of its development as hunter gatherers. Farming, living in cities and pressing buttons for a living are far more recent inventions.

Most of our instincts came about because they are useful for hunter gatherers. These include fears and many of the routines that we accept as part of everyday life. Many of these can be inconvenient in the modern world, and they will probably die out in time.

Because it is in our genes, fear is a sense that prepares us for action. For example if you perceive impending danger you feel fear then decide to run or face the danger.
