Apparently its because your body is really experiencing the shock of falling/landing etc... The shock is what is supposed to do it. Your body wakes up because it really thinks its falling and thus your brain alerts itself, waking you up.

this is a well known myth and i can honestly say iv never met any1 hu has dreamt of hitting the ground, when i dream im falling i hit the floor as i wake up but when i wake up it feels like iv actually fallen, the breath is knowckeed out of me. i think the reason people believe that you'll die in real life is because it'd be such a shock for your brain and thoughts ect that it could cause u to go into a coma or something its not a proven theory but it seems logical hope iv answered ya question xXx

Ive had dream's of falling but never hitting the floor and of floating down the bedroom staires like jumping two at a time.
I think we are not settled, try having a nice milky drink before bed and reading a nice book that you enjoy before sleeping.

Whatever your mind perceives to be real affects the body.

For example think of the most vile image you can imagine, something so incredibly gross, so disgustingly vile that if it was really before you you would vomit. Now does it gives the feeling of actually gagging?

If your mind can create the sensation of you body impacting that is so vivid, so realistic, then the possibility of your body going into shock and your heart stopping is a possibility.

The mind does not distinguish the difference between reality and illusion.

As for waking up, I would say it is a defense mechanism to protect your mind and body from the shock of impact. the old saying of what we cannot see cannot hurt us can fall into this category I would think.

I often dream that I am falling , I am in what appears to be a Roman Colosseum, where they fed Christians to the lions. As I fall I can see this circular building with lots of windows all around it, it is several storeys high. I even get that `falling` feeling in my guts. I never reach the ground either. My sister used to tell me it was Gods` way of punishing me, because I don`t believe he exists!

When I dream of falling I always jump in my sleep and nearly wake myself up. The best thing you can do is read a dream book there are some good ones in Waterstones!

I have heard that when your body relaxes very fast your mind likes to give the impression it is falling to stop you from relaxing too quickly, i not too sure why but when you sleep your body is in a state of relaxation(unconciousness) and if your body shuts down too quickly this sends alarm bells ringing in yourncentral nervous system and wakes you back up, its like a circuit breaker to stop yourself from fallingunconcious too quickly, as sleep itself happens in stages with REM being the last state of conciousness.
REM being Rapid Eye Movement, if you open the eyelid or look closely at someones eyes you can see whether they trully are fast asleep as they are in REM

its never been proved that if you die in a dream you really die, but, i've heard that dreams about falling are caused when you feel like there is nothing you can do to stop something that is happening in your life.

i've had similar experiences, but what i find weird, is that a dream only lasts for 7 seconds, and you may have many in one evening, but will only remember one.

hope this helps

Depending what your beliefs are one theory is that your astral body sometimes leaves your physical body during sleep, and when you dream that you're falling it's actually your astral body falling back into your physcial body. The suddeness of it wakes you up with a jerk and gives the impression you've fallen.
