A president is a figure head, just like the Queen of England, whilst the Prime Minister is the elected head of the ruling party and as such is responsible for Government policy of the day.

Typically the President is elected by the populace while a Prime Minister is chosen by the elected body, the Parliament
So the President can be in opposition to the legislature, while the Prime Minister can not.
So in the 80's we had a Republican President and a Democratic Congress and the converse during the 90's.

Nothing. Both are the head of state
Only the Prime Minister deals with mostly international ordeals (atleast traditionally, but this has mostly changed)
Remember. The president in the U.S. is in no way, shape or form elected by the populace. The president is and has always been elected only by the electoral college, which is made up of both the house and senate.

The President is elected by the voters - the Prime Minister is elected by the Parliament. As for powers - the President will usually have control of the country's military, and the PM will control the legislature and budget.
