mods and rockers-around 1963 when it came into prominence-the mods were inspired by italian teenagers who wore the sharp clothes and rode around on the vespas etc,the rockers were a follow on from the teds-so called because teds(short for edward/edwardian)wore old stylee clothes in a similar style to the mens attire in the days of edward the seventh-there wasnt really a previous lot before then-the teds really being the first to stand out as tennagers-of course inspired by the mainstream acceptance of rock n roll brought to us by gene vincent, elvis, bill haley and lonnie donnegan-before all of that thwere wasnt really much of a difference between teenagers and adults, and of course there had been a pretty major war going on not long before-i was a mod, still am i guess-missed it first time around but got into the music and clothes around 79 and have been the same ever since i suppose-a good film about the early clashes between mods and rockers can be found in quadrophenia-cool film with great soundtrack by the mighty who.if you want to choose a side-it depends what you want-rockers have faster bikes, can fight better but have smelly clothes and greasy hair.mods have hairdryers on wheels for transport, wear great clothes, smell nice but only fight when theres a hundred of them to one other and theres no risk of getting their clothers dirty!!!

The Mods and Rockers were in the early '60's as so many people have rightly replied. You've been given a lot of good information, but I want to add that there were the Teds (Teddy Boys) before the Mods and Rockers (early '50's through to mid 60's)
Teddy Boys were recognizable by their winkle-picker shoes, long sideburns and swept-up hairdos and drainpipe jeans. They also wore rather elegant jackets, often with a Velvet Collar, modelled on the Edwardian era, which gave them the name. (Ted short for Edward).
They liked sharp knives a lot, and were often fighting each other for some reason, but were quite nice to everyone else.
The Fonz could be called a Ted, I suppose. So I'm not sure whether this was an imported look from the States ...
Igor-in-c must have posted his answer as I was typing, and it is a great answer ... I forgot about the Beatniks! Perhaps Beatniks were a slightly older lot; because it is commonly believed that the Teddy Boys were the first to give a cult status to teenagers as in clothes and music and attitude. There were Teddy Girls too. Previously, teenagers dressed and behaved very much like their parents.

The Mods and Rockers first exploded onto the scene in the early Sixties, the Mods were against the Rock and Roll music and liked the more Modern sounds such as Reggae and Ska.
Some people wrongly, thought at the time that it was all about Motorbikes and Scooters but, this is not true.
Most of the Mods became Skinheads and Suede-Heads and the Rockers became Hells Angels.
After this period things changed and although you still had your Motor-bikers, some people turned to Modern Romance.
And then of course everything went crazy with the introduction of Punks etc.
I hope this helps.

They first appeared in 1964.
The mods drove scooters usually Lambrettas heavily decorated with extra lights and a tank Aeriel. and wore either green jackets or smart suites.
The Rockers had motorbikes and were dressed in black leather.
There were often clashes between these, gangs notably at the seaside towns of Bournemouth Brighton Margate during 1964 1965.
They were preceded by the teddy boys of the fifties. and the Beatniks of the early sixties.
When mods grew out of their scooters they turned to Mini coopers for transport. The Rockers seemed to prefer larger Ford or American cars.
As history shows after this came Flower power and the swinging sixties.
Yep i was a Bournemouth mod.

Mods and rockers were early sixties. The scene only happened with the invention of the scooter. I was a rocker in leathers etc. Mods wore a suit to ride. we looked down on them as they rode underpowered scooters which even a bsa bantam would blow off.
before that in the uk there were just motor cylists "ton up boys"
