Democracy serves people in different ways depending on where you stand in the democracy and what kind of democracy it is. In a world where people are living their lives in a daily struggle to feel validated by whatever they can grab onto it makes many people feel that they actually have a voice in the decision making process that governs their lives. If you can make people believe that they are a part of that process many will be more willing to contribute or sacrifice their personal resources for "the good of the whole." In a representative democracy as we have in the US even though the people have little to do with the actual process of law making as long as they are convinced that they have some say it allows politicians to reap the benefits of combining the resources of the entire country without having to actually give the general public any say-so in the actual process of making those laws. In a true democracy it allows each person to feel as if they were at least heard even if the majority doesn't see things quite the way they do personally. There's a lot more to it than that but I'm not really in a book writing mood so that may help you think in the right direction and you can take it from there...

Aristotle said about democracy "Mob rule". Hitler was democratically leader. It all depends strength of the system and literacy of populace. World will be fully democratic sooner. It is a continues process. It is only system of governance which lasts long without rebellion. Eg England more than 300yrs
