When you throw something into a pond, what's the shape of the ripples? Are they always circular or do they depend on the shape of the object? And why?

If you dropped a large square object in the pond, the waves would start out in a square shape, but the corners would get more and more rounded as the move away 'till they eventually appear circular

during ripples or waves the actual particles of the water do not move from one place to another. they just vibrate at their respective places.when you drop something in water the energy of that object gets transferred to the nearest water particle and it starts to vibrate and conducts its energy to the next particle.hence you see a wave.the energy is equally distributed to the particles in contact with the object.so i think that some particles close to the object will take its shape.
