'spring forward, fall back' - in the spring you turn the clock forward 1 hr and so you lose an hour of sleep. in fall you turn the clock back 1 hour and gain an hour of sleep.

daylight saving's time just balances out the day because when you go from summer to winter, the amount of daylight gets shorter. in summer, the sun rises about the same time each day, but then rises later and later as summer turns to winter. so bringing your clock back an hour in the fall adjusts sun rise back at the same time as it was in the summer.

You haven't lost an hour. In fact what you have done is give back the one you borrowed in the spring when you moved your clock forward.

You can learn all about daylight savings time here:

Spring forward, fall back. In the Spring we gain an hour and in the fall we lose an hour. I don't like daylight savings time in the fall.

You don't really lose it...as you do the opposite in the Spring...it's to compensate for the shift in daylight time.

You gained an hour. You will lose it when we turn the clocks ahead next year.
