If you are using a dial up service (connecting to internet using a phone), it is not possible to go wireless...at least not with just one computer.

1. You need to have either a DSL, cable or satellite service. Either will come with a modem whose output goes into your computer via an ethernet cable.

2. You need to buy a wireless router. You connect the modem output ethernet cable into the router instead of your computer. The router will transmit and receive the signals wirelessly to/from your desktop.

3. You need to have a wireless receiver/transmitter for your desktop. This can either be a USB unit (connects to PC via USB) or an internal PCI card. This receives and transmit data from your desktop. Keep in mind that most laptop has a built-in wireless capability so you don't need to do anything. Most desktops however don't have it so you need to buy one.

You need 2 things ,
1 A Router ,That is the wireless transmitter receiver
2 A card or wireless plug (usb network adaptor) for your desk top.
The router plugs directly in to your modem
The wireless plug plugs into a USB port on your desktop.
These things usually come with a CD that you put in your PC and then its just to follow the instructions.
Make sure you enable encryption ,otherwise others can surf on your network.

check with our ISP if the modem that you have is capable for wirless connection...like 2wire modem which modem/router in one, thats capable for wireless connection...if the modem is not capable..then you need to purchase a router...also make sure that the PC has a wireless adapter...once you have that..you can use the wireless adapter client manager to set up the wireless configuration or you can use windows...to help you better with it..you can call you computer manufaturer..or the router manufaturer so that they help you configure your wireless connection...

hope this helps..
