I assume you are asking about the USA. Nobody knows. I have seen a credible guesstimate of 2 million. There are hundreds of thousands of "accidental Americans" like Yaser Esam Hamdi http://supreme.justia.com/us/542/507/case.html who have no connection with the USA other than having been born there or born abroad to American parent.

At a guess I would say there are lots more ex pats (people working out of the country) than illegal immigrants working in the country! Either in USA or UK!
What if they all wanted to come back at the same time?
