it has expired and i want it for sentimental reasons

Some countries give it back to you after punching many holes in it to flag it as expired. Just remember that not all countries do that for security reason. Ask your country's passport office. Im sure they can tell you a few suggestions

You can renew it. You have to send the expired one to them, but they return it with your new one.
