Communalism is used in South Asia to denote attempts to promote ethnic stereotypes between groups of people identified as different communities and to stimulate violence between those groups. In the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century, it is commonly associated with the Sangh Parivar.
Secularism: The promotion of secular policies like the separation of church and state. Not to be confused with Secularization, which aims to be a purely objective and value-free theory of in the sociology of religion. The USA is a secular state because the Constitution forbids establishment of a religion, but it is not secularised compared with much of the rest of the Western world.

When we separate society on the basis of religion and use that as a means of intimidating other religious communities, it is called communalism.
When we group all society as a single community regardless of religious affiliation, that is secularism.
