Firstly they get too fat with adipose liver which can be fatal. Secondly the excess food rots and wrecks the water quality.
Strangely underfeeding is better than overfeeding as wild fish that have often not eaten for many days still come out healthy.
feeding little and often is what to do if it can be managed.

Nothing's wronge I had a great answer and then some one deleted it before I got throught typing. Rrrgg! I basically just said that we judge before we know because it's what we've been taught. We weren't taught this in a school room but actions shout louder than words.

The food rots, which takes oxygen away from the fish and it adds more ammonia which stresses and can kill the fish. It more than just a waste. Try to take out excess with a net if you get too much in at once.

they become obese and they don't want to do anything. Watch tv all day long and years later they'd be 700 pounds and couldn't even move. Firemen have to bring in a crane to get it off the bed and into a hospital.

goldfish get to big.
the food will rot on the bottom thus poisoning the fish.
They might try to eat to much and will die or get to much air in their stomach causing them to swim upside down (only seen that once though)

well for starters, fish have tiny belly's and what they don't eat will cause the water to be murky and bacteria in their water
