spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

http://www.emsisoft.com Their free home for personal use will get rid of this problem for you. A2Squared V2. They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key. The purchase version has an excellent realtime background scanner that really works. (The free program will take care of this problem). (This company is out of Austria). Their software is state of the art technology an the owner is a personal friend. I use in my pc an I can assure you that it free of adware, spyware, malware or any embedded trojans.
Also http://www.trendmicro.com They offer a free tool to download in zip form. (Stand alone)., that will scan for "CWS", and remove.

Sounds like a variant of CWS (CoolWebSearch) As on how to remove it, try running it in safe mode and do a virus scan. You may have to delete some of the registry enteries. But you must be careful doing that! You can really mess somethin up if your not careful.
