I have messed up my laptop so bad that I can't do anything with it. Aside from re-installing windows compleatly, how do I go about defaulting all the settings on the computer back to what they were when windows was first installed (preferably without having to default everything individually)

Lookup "system restore in your hard drive then choose a date you want your laptop to revert to, you can do it all the way back to the day you bought it.

A System Restore point at a time when the computer was in default settings (Essentially the moment after the OS was cleanly installed on the HDD.) will be the closest you'll get to default settings without resorting to the latter option noted below.

As you mentioned, the other option is to do a 'clean' install of the OS. In the future a much easily solution for you will be having an image of your HDD when the OS was newly installed. Norton Ghost is software that can do this.

Furthermore, most brand name computers have a partition mounted on the HDD that contains OS files that can overwrite the existing system files, but not the user's settings if chosen, ie., a 'fresh' install. The two methods mentioned above that involve restoring an OS to default settings are considered a lot faster and easier to carry out compared to a clean install.
