This generation may have lower self esteem than previous generations, but it certainly is not because we praise people for doing nothing! It's because in today's world a lot more is expected of people than it was, say, 40 years ago. When my mother was my age, no one expected her to go to college, to be self sufficient, to be bilingual, to go to the gym regularly. No one expected any of these things. Now there are many demands places on this generation, and sometimes people don't know when they've done well, because we always expect more.

Self esteem develops after an individual becomes competent and mastering tasks in life. When we have low expectations for young people and believe we are instilling positive self esteem by complimenting them for accomplishing nothing, we actually contribute to low self esteem.

i agree that we are already living in a universe full of complexed, confused and low-self esteemed people. if you look up the questions in psychology section, you'll find many similar to yours. that means one thing : "this is the land of confusion"..very disappointing, can't possibly imagine how the hell we 'll get out of it....
